Science on Screen presents BOMBSHELL!

We are very very proud to present our final event in this season’s Science On Screen series, and it’s one we’re very excited about!

Focusing on women in science has been our goal, so when this film became part of the SoS film library, we were thrilled.  Hedy Lamarr was so much more than a beautiful face (she was, historically speaking, among the most beautiful), she was a brilliant, innovative, original thinker, inventor, and and scientist.  She helped Howard Hughes design better planes by studying streamlining in birds and fishes.  She founded Aspen as a ski resort.  She produced movies (unheard of for a woman at the time).  She came up with techniques on cosmetic surgery to hide scars.  And most impressive, she essentially invented Frequency Hopping (along with composer George Antheil) which is the secret behind Bluetooth and Wifi technology.  And she did it all with almost no recognition or reward.  Her story is one of the many obscured in history by both her beauty and her sex.  But now her time has come!

To accompany this remarkable story, we have two remarkable woman from right in our own backyard who are using innovative techniques and out-of-the-box thinking to better the world we live in, through the magic of BEER!  Melody Crosby and Adrienne Scott are Alaskan Brewing Company’s Quality Assurance Analyst and Quality Assurance Supervisor, and they’ll be here to talk about all the wacky stuff they’re experimenting with–sciencewise–to craft beer.

Beer-Powered Bombshells: Explosive innovations from Alaskan Brewing Company

There’s a lot more than just brewing going on at Alaskan Brewing! Melody Crosby and Adrienne Scott from the Alaskan Brewing Company lab are giving a behind the scenes look at the science taking place at your local brewery. Meet the women you don’t know, behind the beer that you do. They will describe beer lab breakthroughs and the cutting-edge, sustainable practices that make them possible.

About the Speakers:

Melody Crosby came to Alaskan Brewing Company, after completing her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science with a minor in Chemistry from Oregon State University.  Her focus was on Pre-Veterinarian Medicine. OSU was the place where she tried her very first beer; an Alaskan Brewing IPA – was it science or destiny that she became a Quality Assurance Analyst.  She is a member of the Beer Judge Certification Program and is a Cicerone Certified Beer Server.

Adrienne Scott came to Alaskan Brewing Company, after working in the field of Environmental Science she has worked in many aspects from air quality to drinking water analysis.  She has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alaska Southeast. After drinking all the water she had tested, she decided beer was the next natural progression – she loves Alaskan Brewing’s Icy Bay IPA.  She is also a member of the Beer Judge Certification Program, a Cicerone Certified Beer Server, and the Quality Assurance Supervisor at Alaskan Brewing Company.
